Construction Has Started - Illawarra Road Upgrades

Work has begun on the next stage of the Illawarra Road upgrade, delivering safer, more efficient road connections between Tasmania’s agricultural regions, ports, airports and key freight hubs.


Stage 2B - Bass Highway to Meander Valley Council boundary
Department of State Growth advisory Work hours: 7am – 5pm, Monday to Friday

Expect changes during works:
• Lane closures
• Reduced speed limits
• Up to 15 minutes additional travel time


Please drive carefully, follow traffic signs and controllers, and observe speed limits — even outside working hours.

About the Project:

The full upgrade stretches from the Bass Highway in the north to the Perth Link in the south, with key benefits including:

• Improved safety
• Increased productivity
• Better travel efficiency

Current Stage (2B):

• Between the Bass Highway and the Meander Valley/Northern Midlands municipal boundary
• Includes new overtaking lane (southbound), slow vehicle turnouts, flexible wire rope barriers, and turning facilities at key points.
