Get behind our community by getting behind the wheel!

If you enjoy a road trip and a chat, Meander Valley Council’s Deloraine Community Car is looking for volunteer drivers!
Meander Valley Council’s Deloraine Community Car is looking for volunteer drivers to help support people in the Meander Valley community so if you enjoy a road trip and a chat, this may be the opportunity for you!
“Our volunteer drivers provide a vital service for many who live alone, are unable to access public transport or cannot afford a taxi to take them to their non-urgent medical appointments. Currently, the Deloraine car is providing transport for an average of 20 to 30 people every week, so if there are people who would like to join our team of drivers we’d really value their contributions,” service coordinator Sharyn Jackson said.
All community car drivers require a valid driver’s licence and a working with vulnerable people card, but if you do not have the latter then you will be reimbursed for the cost to obtain one.
Beyond providing transport, volunteer drivers also have an opportunity to make new friends.
“Our drivers and their passengers have built wonderful relationships over the years and many of these have been long standing. Being a volunteer driver is very rewarding,” Sharyn said.
The Deloraine Community Car often provides a service to the Launceston General Hospital and other medical specialists in the vicinity, so volunteer drivers should be comfortable navigating around the CBD.
On average, regular volunteer drivers are on the road about one day a fortnight and shifts on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are in most need of additional support right now, however, one day a month shifts or drivers that are available as “reserves” are also appreciated.
“Ideally if we could recruit four or more drivers so we have someone who can take the wheel if someone is unwell or unavailable, that would really help us out,” Sharyn said.
The role of community car driver would suit someone who, may have recently retired, likes people, has a caring nature and enjoys giving back to the community.
If you would like to get behind the wheel to help the community in Deloraine, contact Sharyn Jackson on 0427 504 546.
