The rainbow flag has risen above Meander Valley Council chambers for the first time

The Meander Valley Council is flying the pride flag from Council chambers for the first time today to celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

Councillor Anne-Marie Loader tabled a motion to fly the flag at Council's April Ordinary Meeting as a way of demonstrating Council's opposition to discrimination and support for equality.

“The rainbow flag flying on IDAHOBIT sends a strong visual message that Meander Valley Council advocates for equality and inclusion," Mayor Wayne Johnston said.

IDAHOBIT is observed every year and aims to coordinate international events that raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ rights violations.

“Council is committed to supporting and consulting with all members of our community and aims to develop a community agenda to inform actions that deliver positive social equity outcomes for everyone,” Mayor Johnston said.

The flying of the rainbow flag will occur each year on IDAHOBIT.
