Celebrations on hold as Council considers safety advice.

Meander Valley Council has announced that its 2022 Australia Day Awards event has been postponed in light of Tasmania’s current COVID-19 status and public health and safety advice.

The event was scheduled for 25 January at the Country Club Casino to recognise volunteers and Australia Day award recipients.

Mayor Wayne Johnston said Council’s priority was to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep the community safe.

“We are disappointed to have to postpone the event but it is important we do all we can to practice caution to keep our residents and staff protected,” Mayor Johnston said.

“We still intend to formally recognise our award recipients at a later date. It is important for the community to come together to celebrate those who have gone above and beyond for their communities.

“These community members play a crucial role in making Meander Valley such a great place to live and we thank them for their dedication.”

Council will make an announcement on an alternative awards event in the near future. A scaled back ceremony to formally bestow Australian Citizenship will, subject to COVID-19, still go ahead on Australia Day.
