Council is encouraging Meander Valley residents to nominate a local hero through its annual Volunteer and Australia Day Awards.

Residents can nominate volunteers who have made a significant contribution to the community through the following award categories:

Citizen of the Year;
Young Citizen of the Year;
Community Group or Event of the Year;
Sports Award;
Volunteer Service Awards.

Mayor Wayne Johnston said the awards were a highlight for Council.

“Council’s awards program is now in its 26th year and during that time we have recognised more than 750 community volunteers which is just fantastic,” Mayor Johnston said.

“We highly value the contribution volunteers make to our community. They work tirelessly through their leadership and volunteering to help us build a strong and connected community and we want to make sure this commitment is acknowledged.

“The Volunteer and Australia Day Awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognise these community members and we are urging people to get their nominations in soon so we can all come together in January to celebrate.”

The value of volunteering to Tasmania was estimated at $4 billion in 2019, as referenced in Volunteering Tasmania’s Biennial State of Volunteering report. In total, Tasmanians contributed $68.2 million volunteer hours to the community.

The awards presentation will be held on 25 January at the Mt Pleasant Showroom at Country Club Tasmania from 5.30pm – 7pm.

People can nominate for Council’s Volunteer and Australia Day Awards by visiting Council’s website or by picking up a nomination form from Council’s customer service centre at 26 Lyall Street Westbury or phone 6393 5300. Nominations are open until 31 October. To complete your nomination online, click here
