Each year, Council recognises those who have made outstanding contributions to the community through the presentation of Australia Day and Volunteer Awards. If you know an individual, organisation, event or volunteer program in Meander Valley that is making a difference and deserves to be recognised, consider nominating them for an award.



Australia Day Awards - Nominations open until 31 October, 2022

As part of our Australia Day celebrations held in January, Council presents Meander Valley's Australia Day Awards. Nominations are now open and accepted for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, the Meander Valley Sports Award and Event or Organisation of the Year.

Eligibility Criteria

Citizen of the Year
Nominees must be Australian Citizens, reside in the Meander Valley municipality and be aged 16 years or older as of 26 January, 2023. The selection panel shall give consideration to the following criteria:
• Demonstrated commitment to the betterment of the community
• Undertaken activities which have short and long term benefits for others
• Shows vision and leadership
• Active in the community where the community benefits
• Showed outstanding achievement in e.g. academic,cultural environment, civic responsibility
• Impact of the activities of an individual or group on the Community whether it be immediate or lasting
• Law abiding and a role model to others

Young Citizen of the Year
Nominees must be Australian Citizens, reside in the Meander Valley municipality and be aged between 16 and 30 years of age as of 26 January, 2023. The selection panel shall give consideration to the following criteria:
• Demonstrated commitment to the betterment of the community
• Undertaken activities which have short and long term benefits for others
• Shows vision and leadership
• Active in the community where the community benefits
• Showed outstanding achievement in e.g. academic, cultural environment, civic responsibility
• Law abiding and a role model to others
• Active in youth issues

Meander Valley Sports Award
Nominees must be Australian Citizens and reside in the Meander Valley municipality. The selection panel shall give consideration to the following criteria:
• Nominee has demonstrated a strong local connection with the community and participated significantly within the municipality for a minimum of two years
• Shows a fair play approach by displaying consistent sportsmanship qualities including being inclusive, supportive and encouraging
• Demonstrated a commitment to the wider sporting community in a voluntary capacity
• Achieved a level of proficiency, competency and skill in their chosen sport
• Demonstrated leadership qualities

Community Event or Organisation
This award is given to an individual, organisation or community group who has staged an outstanding and noteworthy community program or event during the year. The program or event should have:
• Engaged in community participation
• Had a positive purpose, outcome and impact on the community
• Shown vision and commitment
• Demonstrated community values, broad community involvement and appeal, achieved community acceptance and support and participation
• Been community focused, and not staged for personal or private reward or financial benefit

This program recognises and acknowledges voluntary service to the Meander Valley Community by individuals. Nominations are now open and are accepted for:

Exceptional Voluntary Service
