Westbury Historic Town Centre Character Study: Preliminary Consultation

With character on strong display in its historic and vibrant town centre, Westbury is a unique place with a strong community and ample history. This character is centred around the Village Green and the charming streets of William Street, King Street and Lonsdale Promenade. We are investigating ways to preserve what so many know and love about the heart of Westbury. 

 

Council is investigating design guidelines and planning mechanisms to protect the character of Westbury's historic town centre. A Preliminary Overview has been prepared that explores and describes the personality of the town centre. This overview also considers the elements that contribute to this character and identifies potential risks if further protections are not put in place.

Council is seeking feedback on this preliminary overview to understand the community’s:

  1. Perspectives on the character of the historic town centre; and
  2. Appetite for specific planning controls and design guidelines to protect and enhance that character.

An overview of the project will also be held as part of the Westbury Community Forum on Tuesday 23 September.

The retention and enhancement of the Westbury historic town centre is important. The features, places, layout, buildings, landscaping have been created by the people that live and have lived in the area. New development should respect the character of the township and help to preserve the towns unique character.
Land around the Village Green should be prioritised for residential infill (e.g. subdivided or developed for housing).
Land within the Historic Town Centre, other than around the Village Green, should be prioritised for further development (e.g. developed for housing or shops).
Streets should be designed to respect the historic character of the township.
Trees that contribute to the character of the township should be protected.
Landscaping that contributes to the character of the township, such as the hedges surrounding the Village Green, should be protected.
Demolition of buildings that contribute to the character of the town centre should be limited.
