Roads and Bridges

The following main roads and associated bridges are managed and maintained by the State Government through the Department of Infrastructure, Energy & Resources and enquiries should be directed to that Division's Launceston office, telephone number 6336 2111.

  • Bass Highway
  • Meander Valley Road
  • Birralee Road
  • Highland Lakes Road
  • Mole Creek Road and
  • Liena Road up to Mersey Forest Road

Most of the regularly used road network throughout the Council area is managed and maintained by Council.  There are however many roads which are controlled by Forestry or the Hydro Electric Commission.

Council maintains the road pavement, kerb and channel and footpaths within towns and open drains in rural areas. Through rural areas Council periodically slashes roadside grass although in the town Council relies upon residents maintaining that section of nature strip outside their own property.

Council is responsible for maintaining all bridges within its own road network and this includes over 200 structures. Council also provides and maintains road name signs and some tourism direction signs.

The area outside your property is part of the road reserve and before carrying out any works, other than mowing, within the road reserve you must obtain permission from the Council. This relates to activities such as putting in stormwater outlets, modifying driveways, planting trees or storing materials.

Council has an obligation to ensure that any work within the road reservation is to a high standard and that safety hazards are not created by works or storage of materials within the road reserve.

Urban Street and Rural Road Numbering

Council allocates urban street numbers and also numbers associated with the distance-based rural road addressing system. It is your responsibility to display the house or property number on the letter box or adjacent to the property gateway so it is clearly visible from the roadway for the purposes of emergency services, postal deliveries etc.

With regards to rural road addresses new number plates may be issued by Council when the rural address is allocated, subject to availability.
